WHERE IS IT?
The lodge is in Nylstroom (Limpopo), about 30 kilometres from the N1 Kranskop offramp. It’s an easy drive of about three hours from Johannesburg; about two from Pretoria. The lodge is well-signposted from the R33 and the gravel road leading to the main gate is fairly well-maintained.
There are 40 rooms and two two-room suites set among manicured lawns and neat pathways. My room, close to reception, was definitely four-star quality. The bed was large and comfortable; the flat-screen TV was mounted above the tea and coffee station; and the air con kept the room cool. There was a work desk, but it was installed at the wrong height for working. I did, however, get used to the elevated position after a while. The bathroom was separated from the sleeping quarters by a curtain and had a large bath, two basins and a toilet cubicle. Each room has a small patio with a couple of the most comfortable chairs I’ve ever sat on, perfect for a quite break with a cup of coffee.
RESTAURANTS & BARS
I ate my meals at the dining room, although there are a number of dining options available. As the lodge was almost empty, the chef opted for plated meals as opposed to buffets, which they tend to do for groups of more than 20 people. For breakfast, I ordered a simple plate of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast, which was delicious. Lunch consisted of a homemade beef pie, a chicken breast, coleslaw and a Greek salad. Dinner was indulgent, with a prawn and melon starter, perfectly cooked sirloin with an upmarket take on pap and chakalaka and creamed spinach, and a decadent chocolate brownie with Chantilly cream for dessert.
BUSINESS & MEETING FACILITIES
The lodge boasts a fully outfitted conference hall a few metres from reception. There are two rooms, seating between eight and 120 delegates. The main room offers a deck overlooking a waterhole for breakaways. The air-conditioned venue is well designed for comfort, offering a functional atmosphere to facilitate training, brainstorming sessions, strategical planning, or any other conference. The lodge is also very experienced at staging weddings. Guests and conference delegates are entitled to free wi-fi, but be aware that, because of its remote location, the signal can be spotty. I battled to connect in my room, however my MTN dongle was able to pick up a stable signal. The best wi-fi signal can usually be found in reception or at the restaurant.
Sitting on 2,000 hectares of bushveld, game viewing drives make for excellent leisure activity. There is also a swimming pool and Jacuzzi for guest use and a small, but very professional spa with a range of treatments.
A great option for a conference, wedding or executive management bosberaad. Staff are friendly and attentive. Accommodation and facilities are top notch. And the peace and quiet of the bush is a huge plus.
